DOCOMOMO ISC-ET Guidelines for Workshops.

DOCOMOMO International Specialist Committee on Education & Theory (DOCOMOMO ISC E+T) has the fundamental role of connecting DOCOMOMO International’s general mission with the advancement and dissemination of knowledge, and fostering relevant educational approaches and discussions on theory

There are three forms of education that we have identified as key in DOCOMOMO’s work: educating practicing and aspiring professionals and conservation specialists, educating the general public to foster greater appreciation and preservation of modern architecture, and developing a relevant body of theory and intellectual content to support and underpin these endeavors and ultimately form the basis for our educational approach. These three approaches can be addressed by the direct education of the specialized public (students and professionals) that attends international and national conferences and student workshops. DOCOMOMO International can provide the framework and venue for this exchange to become a more powerful tool. Furthermore, the design approach presented in the workshops allows students to question, discuss and understand the interventions, practice and theory they may have learned through coursework or presentations. Enhancing this fundamental opportunity is crucial to the success of the educational mission of DOCOMOMO International.

Students play an important role in the future of preservation. They will be the educators, historians, architects and preservationists of the future and be responsible for continuing the organization’s mission. We as a committee believe that education is the ultimate tool for the protection of modern buildings, sites and neighborhoods, while indirectly influencing the profession and execution of preservation and architectural design and principles at large. To that end, DOCOMOMO ISCE+T” has prepared a set of guidelines that are intended to serve as a starting point for the workshops that DOCOMOMO International and regional organizations host in conjunction with conferences and meetings. These guidelines aim to provide not only the beginning of an intellectual framework but also to give best practices methods, outline logistical details and frame the individual workshops’ role in the context of DOCOMOMO’s mission. As such these guidelines are expected to change as our experience with workshops broadens.
